The history of Robben Island
Just 7 kilometers off the coast of Cape Town lies Robben Island. What was formerly an apartheid prison, is now a historical landmark for South Africa. Robben Island is most famous for imprisoning Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe. Visitors are guided on a two part tour around the island and inside the prison. Usually, tour groups are led by former prisoners. However time is no man’s friend, meaning the former prisoners are growing old in age.
South Africa is a country where history is both the fabric and thread to understanding racial engagement. Unfortunately, activities like the Robben Island tour exclude the majority of this country as a ticket costs R 340 for adults. Nevertheless, it is an experience worth saving up.
